Signs You Need New Windows in Your Home
Jun 29, 2017As your home’s windows age, it’s a good idea to check up on their condition to see if they need replaced. Old or worn out windows can not only run down the look and value of your home, they can be costing you extra money on your energy bills each month. Here are some signs that you might need to replace the windows in your home.
Energy Costs
Condensation
The seal on your windows can start to erode over time, allowing air and moisture through. If you’re seeing a white film, water drops or fog appearing on the inside of your window or in between the panes, the seal on the windows is no longer keeping air and moisture from entering or escaping. This can leave you with significantly higher heating and cooling bills each year.
Single-Pane Glass
One pane of glass is often not sufficient protection from the elements in extreme temperatures. In Kansas, the heat of summer and the cold of winter will overwhelm windows with only one layer of protection. If your house has single-pane windows, you could be paying a lot more for heating and A/C than you need to.
Cracked Glass
If the glass in your windows is cracked, you definitely have a problem. A crack in your window is a sure sign that you’re wasting money on energy costs. A crack easily allows air and moisture to seep through, which can also lead to mold and mildew buildup.
Storm Windows
Storm windows don’t have the advantages that newer windows have. Designed to block out wind, they are a hassle to put up and install, require maintenance and aren’t as energy efficient as a new window would be.
Ease of Access
Difficult to Open and Close
If your windows are stuck in one position, it’s likely the rollers and guides are worn out. Not being able to open and close windows easily poses a serious risk to you and your family in the event of a fire or other emergency.
Don’t Lock Securely
Windows that don’t close and lock securely will not only cost you more in heating and cooling charges, but leave your home more vulnerable to break-ins. New windows will be able to close all the way and lock securely for your protection.
Maintenance
Fading Furniture
If you’re noticing your furniture or carpet starting to fade in places where windows are allowing light in, it’s because your windows aren’t doing a good job blocking out the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Newer, energy-efficient windows will do a better job blocking out the sun’s rays.
Window Frames Falling Apart
If your window frames are rotting or falling apart, it’s time to take action immediately. Newer windows are available in vinyl and aluminum which are low maintenance and won’t rot, flake, blister or peel.
Difficult to Clean
Gone are the days when you’d have to climb a ladder to clean the outside glass on your windows. Double-hung windows have tilt-in sashes that let you clean both sides of the glass from inside your home.
